The six Marcello Sonatas (originally for cello) presented in this series are a great first step into the traditional solo repertoire for
the young double bassist. These pieces are best introduced one the student has a grasp of basic shifting, bow strokes, and accidentals.
They are a great complement to the materials presented in the Simandl or Vance methods and are perfect for early audition pieces or
solo and ensemble contests.

The six Vivaldi Sonatas serve a similar role as the Marcello Sonatas described above. They are slightly more difficult overall, but they
should prove to be engaging and satisfying solo repertoire for the intermediate student.

Frederick Zimmerman’s selections in Bach for the Young Bass Player allow the early to intermediate student a chance to work on repertoire
by the great J.S. Bach. These pieces are one movement each and are similar in difficulty to the Marcello and Vivaldi Sonatas.

The Capuzzi Concerto is the first concerto that I recommend for students. I usually introduce this piece after students have been
playing for two to three years and have worked through the first two Vance volumes. This piece paves the way technically for more
challenging future repertoire.
