Arnold E. Schnitzer is a member of the Guild of American Luthiers, The Violin Society of America and the International Society of Bassists. Before becoming a full-time luthier, he received a conservatory degree in music performance and composition, played in two symphonic orchestras for a number of years, studied jazz bass with Dave Holland and Michael Moore, toured, recorded, and played local jazz and pop gigs for about 20 years. He was mentored in guitar and bass guitar making by Carl Thompson, and later in bass restoration by Lou DiLeone of New Haven, Connecticut.

Paul Strelau

Paul Strelau

U.S. distributor for Samuel Shen instruments

Website: www.cscproducts.com

Location: Penfield, NY (Rochester area)

description of Paul’s work from bassist Jeff Weeks:

Paul also played with the RPO until his business picked up so much he had to retire from the RPO very young. Paul is the U.S. distributor for Samuel Shen instruments, but is quite the accomplished luthier himself. If you aren’t familiar with Samuel Shen basses check the website for Paul’s Shop and Samuel Shen’s products here http://www.cscproducts.com/. As a teacher, I am always happy to see a young student come to me with one of these instruments — especially one set up at Paul’s shop. Chinese instruments in general get a really bad rap, but in my opinion these are much better than most alternatives in the under $5,000 market. Paul does great work and has a staff of bassists that do great work as well. Jesse Watras also played with the RPO and retired before he was even 35 (I think…he’s pretty young) to work with Paul. Tim Legler went to Eastman as a bassist and also works with Paul.
