I encourage all of my pre-college double bass students to get involved with either the Midwest Young Artists program or the Chicago Youth Symphony. Both of these Chicagoland youth orchestra programs are really top-notch. I have work with both of them if various capacities over the last few years, and I send students to both of them.

I firmly believe that becoming a successful orchestral musician requires this sort of training before college. In these programs students meet the best young musicians from the entire nine million+ Chicagoland region, which is something that simply cannot be duplicated. Students also get an opportunity to be around the best young Chicagoland musicians from all instruments, and the also get an opportunity to play in Symphony Center downtown or Pick-Staiger in Evanston, to record albums, and to tour internationally.

All of my high school age Chicagoland bass students that have gone on to music school have been in one of these two programs. Without exception. I have not had a student successfully audition for music school without being involved in one of these programs.

Students, PLEASE join these programs.
