Google Mars

I’ve been playing with Google Mars recently. Click on the picture of Mars to try it out. You can zoom in fairly close and move the map around like Google Earth. Also, try switching between elevation, visible, and infrared modes.

I just added a really excellent music education blog to my Blogroll. It is called Catalysts & Connections, and it covers all sorts of topics in the field of music education. Check out a recent post here. Evan Tobias is the author of the blog, and he also maintains an excellent Blogroll. [...]

More Advice on Flying with Your Bass

Polyphonic.org has an informative new post from Eric Beers, a member of the Symphonic Services Division of the American Federation of Musicians. Flying with the bass (or any musical instrument) has grown increasingly more difficult with each year after 9/11. In 1997 and 1998 I flew about seven or eight times a year [...]

Shostakovich Festival on WFMT

Chicago’s classical music station WFMT is having a Shostakovich Festival this month. Shostakovich’s birthday week itself will contain the most Shostakovich programming, but the whole month will feature his music. WFMT program director Peter Whorf wrote this recently on the Chicago Classical Music blog:
I’m very excited about what we’ve put together to [...]

Last holdout bands join iTunes

I wrote a post about iTunes and how it is affecting classical music downloads in March. You can find that post here.
Wired News recently put out a story on some popular artists who only now agreed to sell their music on iTunes. Here is a quote from the story about why certain artists [...]

Traveling with cats

I spent the last week in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and I drove back to Chicago today with my two cats (Dan and Angel) in the car. They are very sweet cats, but they do not make good traveling companions. The link below plays one minute of so of cat whining–they did [...]

Snakes on a Plane

Has anybody seen Snakes on a Plane yet? I will be seeing it soon. My cousin Barry Samson made the trailer for the movie. He has also directed some movies, including Ice Pawn and The Ice Runner.

They have tracks for drummers, bassists, vocalists, horn players, pianists, and vibraphonists. Here is the page for bass materials, and here [...]
