Several years ago I played double bass for the Pacific Music Festival, a summer music festival based in Sapporo, Japan. This festival was started in the late 1980s by legendary conductor Leonard Bernstein. In addition to the Pacific Music Festival (PMF), Bernstein founded the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, and I played with this festival while in college as well. Both of these music festivals were a great time, but I especially enjoyed my month in Sapporo. In addition to several concerts at Sapporo’s beautiful Kitara Concert Hall, we played in outlying communities around Hokkaido and in Tokyo.


While in Japan I had a lot of time to watch Japanese TV. This is the kind of stuff I often saw:
