Catalin Rotaru at Arizona State University has some great online recordings (MP3) of himself playing some excellent double bass showpieces. Click on any of the links below–they will take you to Catalin’s recordings. Catalin previously taught at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. I teach at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater, one of the other satellite University of Wisconsin campuses.
Catalin is a great guy and an awesome player. Check out his playing below–it is definitely worth it.
-
Giovanni Bottesini – Variations on “Carnival of Venice” (excerpt)
-
Pablo de Sarasate – Zigeunerweisen (excerpt, originally for violin)
-
Johannes Brahms – Sonata no. 1 in E minor for cello and piano (excerpt from the 1st movement)

Catalin was a spectacular bassist here at University of Illinois (UIUC) as a Masters student, winning the Krannert Debut Artist award, and a nice guy. Also played the Koussevitsky with our orchestra beautifully.

Agreed–Catalin is a great bass player and a great guy. It sounds like he is having a lot of success at Arizona State. I had a student of mine recently transfer down there, and he really is enjoying his studies. Catalin really works him hard, and I think that my former student is blossoming as a player as a result.
