Believe it or not, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago used to advertise in Time magazine. Here is an ad from 1998 featuring the bass section. I am the second player from the right. One of my favorite things about this picture is the obvious empty stool in the middle of the bass section. Some guy skipped rehearsal that day, so he didn’t get to be in Time magazine!

I had no idea that this ad had come out until a fellow student at Northwestern University mentioned that I was in Time that week. I went and bought a bunch of copies immediately, as did my folks. It was a national ad, which was pretty cool. Three years later the Civic Orchestra had abandoned these sorts of ads and was tanking financially. They chopped the orchestra down to a chamber ensemble for a few seasons to save money. I was in the orchestra at a really good time. My last year (1999-2000) we went to Carnegie Hall with Daniel Barenboim for a week of conducting workshops and a mammoth three hour concert.
