The National Music Museum (formerly called the Shrine to Music Museum) is located on the campus of the University of South Dakota in the town of Vermillion. I was born in this town and grew up about an hour north of it in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The National Music Museum is a fascinating place to visit. If you are ever passing through South Dakota it is definitely worth stopping. Here are some pieces from their vast collection:

The King Violoncello by Andrea Amati, Cremona, after 1538

Lute by Thomas Edlinger, Prague, 1728

Andrea Amati’s f-holes (1574)

Grand Piano by Nannette Streicher and Son, Vienna, 1829

Two 19th-century Mute Violins

The Rawlins Stradivari Guitar, 1700

See these and many other beautiful and unusual instruments on their website.
