There is quite a discussion going on in the comments for a recent post on Michael Hovnanian’s CSO Bass Blog. Michael mentioned that the Chicago Symphony has made their ‘Welcome Yule’ concerts a required part of the season rather than a “members of” optional service. This prompted many comments from people pointing out that the CSO is now essentially doing what most other orchestras do–pops concerts.

Whether one delights in seeing the CSO have to play ‘Welcome Yule’ or mourns the popsification of one of the few 100% legit ensembles here in the U.S., it is significant that the Chicago Symphony is moving in this direction. an it marks a shift in thinking. Good or bad?
