Drew McManus wrote a recent post about a pair of articles he edited for Jonathan Boen, Principal Horn for the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The concerto was commissioned from Jan Bach, and the articles (available on Polyphonic.org) chronicle Jonathan’s experiences with the entire commissioning, rehearsing, performing, and recording process. It is an interesting read and definitely worth checking out. There are several embedded musical examples you can listen to in the articles. Check it out on Polyphonic.org here.

I participated in the premiere and in the recording for this concerto, so if you get a chance to hear Jonathan’s recording (with the Chicago Philharmonic) you will hear yours truly in the bass section. This concerto was recorded at Northwestern University’s Pick-Staiger Concert Hall in Evanston, Illinois. I have played in this hall countless times in the past, having completed two music degrees at this institution. You can read my thoughts and observations on this hall here.
