Lyric Opera of Chicago and Grant Park Symphony double bassist Andy Anderson has just been appointed as a member of the bass faculty of the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois. This is really exciting news both for Andy and for the bass community at large.

Here’s why:

  • Andy is an unbelievable double bass coach and teacher, bringing together influences from a wide variety of double bass schools of thought. A student of Andy will be a very well-rounded player with a solid musical and technical foundation.
  • Andy is an unbelievable player, both as a soloist and an orchestral player. Being able to hear the audition literature performed by someone who has recently won two major auditions is very important to one’s ability to win a job.
  • Roosevelt University, in conjunction with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, offers a full-tuition fellowship to select string players. I was the recipient of this fellowship from 1998-2000 at Northwestern University, and I highly recommend it. Free Masters degree, playing under Chicago Symphony conductors at Orchestra Hall, and studying with the likes of Andy? Not a bad deal.
  • Roosevelt University also has Chicago Symphony bassists Michael Hovnanian and Steve Lester on faculty. The opportunity to work with these players (in master class settings, lessons, and coachings) plus Andy while playing in the Civic Orchestra and paying no tuition is, to say the least, a good deal.

Andy has been the guest on several Contrabass Conversations episodes. You can listen to them here:

or subscribe to the show in iTunes.

We have more Contrabass Conversations episodes featuring Andy coming out soon, and Andy is also going to be assisting me in adding some very cool new features to the blog. We’ll leave it at that for now, but I think that bass players out there will be very into what we’re planning.
