Bassist Roman Patkoló plays Zigeunerweisen

Bassist Roman Patkoló’s rendition of the allegro section of Pablo Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen is truly outstanding in this video. What a bass player! Does anybody know what sort of instrument he plays?

Roman plays an Antonio Gagliano bass (built 1725) that was given to him by the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation in 2002.

The bas is not Antonio’, but Nicolo Gagliano (fl. ca. 1740-1780) was an Italian violin-maker, the eldest son of Alessandro Gagliano. He made many admirable instruments; often imitated, some have been mistaken for those of Stradivari.
