Meyers-Briggs Personality Test

At the urging of double bassist John Grillo, I recently took the Meyers-Briggs Personality Test. If you haven’t ever taken this test, check it out here–it is quick, and the results are interesting. You can read more about the test at this Wikipedia page.
I came out as a type eNFj, which is a [...]

A Word about the Ads

Readers of my blog have probably noticed that I’ve added a few ads here and there. Long-time readers of my blog (those from late 2005/early 2006) may remember that I used to have ads up here. I took them down when I redesigned, preferring the cleaner look of an ad-free blog.
Doing Contrabass Conversations [...]

More Nora the Cat from John Floeter

Grant Park Symphony and Northern Illinois University bass instructor John Floeter sent me a link to a page filled with the musical stylings of Nora the Cat. I blogged about Nora a few days ago, and this page is filled with a ton of other information about Nora.
I sometimes wonder if my cat love [...]

Jacqueline du Pré’s Violin Playing from Musical Assumptions

I forgot to mention in my earlier post today that I found the link to the ‘Trout’ Quintet horsing around video from this Musical Assumptions post. I like to give credit to where I find things, so I just wanted to add that. More posts to come tomorrow…

Advice for Aspiring Music Performance Majors Part II - Advice from Kathryn Nettleman

Double bassist Kathryn Nettleman recently left a great comment on my Advice for Aspiring Music Performance Majors post. Kate has been a member of a full-time orchestra (The Naples Philharmonic), a member of the New World Symphony, and has performed with countless major symphony orchestras. Recent engagements include the Chicago Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, [...]

Goofing Around with the ‘Trout’ Quintet

I wrote a post in the fall of 2006 highlighting the rehearsal process of the famous ‘Trout’ Quintet documentary from 1969 featuring Daniel Barenboim on piano, Itzhak Perlman on violin, Pinchas Zuckerman on viola, Jacqueline du Pré on cello, and Zubin Mehta on double bass.
Check my old post out here. In addition to the [...]

When Paradise Catches Fire

Matt Heller, my double bass colleague who was recently featured in the New York Times, recently posted this shot of a building on fire near the Plymouth Hotel (a residence for New World Symphony members):
Those of you who have read my exploding car gig story know how much I dislike fire.

Nora, The Piano-Playing Cat

Violinist Holly Mulcahy sent me a link to this incredibly cute video featuring Nora the cat. This cat is pretty talented at the piano, all things considered. I don’t own a piano, but I have ot wonder if my kitties would be as into playing as Nora obviously is.

Bassiona Amorosa

A lot of people have been requesting or commenting on this video featuring double bassist Roman Patkolo (with Jan Jirmasek accompanying on bass) and Maxim Vengerov on violin. Well, I got a comment recently directing me to a great archive of classical music video clips, and I’m happy to say that the complete version [...]
