I never understood why the turnout for that audition was so low. Earlier Elgin auditions always brought a crowd, and the most recent ones have drawn a lot of candidates. Weird.

And when you are fired from the Elgin Symphony, I can claim my rightful spot in the pantheon of regional greatness! You KNOW the only reason you beat me out at that audition was that I had just gotten back from France two or three days earlier — I hadn’t played in three weeks…

No kidding – that’s one of my favorite audition stories. “Runner-up!” I proudly announce. “Without touching the bass for three weeks.” I had nearly had the gig.

“Wow,” drool my devoted audiences. “How many competitors were there for the position?”

“Um, two,” I say. “Me and Jason Heath.”
