Matt Wengerd of 104 Weeks recently started a blog for the University of South Florida jazz department. This is a really great use of Blogger in my eyes. One can put up photos, links, text, and the like just like a regular webpage, and Blogger allows for easy collaboration on blogs, allowing multiple users to post information to the same blog. Creating blogs for departments and organizations is something that has been going on for a while in the world of business, and it is starting to catch on in the music world as well.

To me, this is the sort of thing that I would have loved to have seen when I was choosing a college. Being able to see the insights, observations, and activities of students and faculty within a department, and being able to see the events that have happened from a personal perspective (not just bland summaries of programs put up by the university internet resources staff) is something that blogging really facilitates.

For a good example of how a department blog can be used, check out Matt’s post about the Monday Jazz Series with Dan Hearle.
