Here is a shot of the Elgin Symphony bass section from our recent concert cycle at the beginning of April. One or another of us is often subbing out of a cycle for other work, so it is rare that the six of us are actually assembled as a section.
The players are (left to right): John Floeter, Jason Heath, Scott Rosenthal, Susan Sullivan, Kate Nettleman, Tim Shaffer.
I like how much radically darker Kate’s bass is than any of the other instruments. You can see that we have different extension styles as well, with John playing a Stenholm machine, Kate and I having extensions with closers, and Tim and Scott having “stick” extensions with one closer for the E string.
It’s hard to tell, but you may also notice that I have one extra closer to take me down to a low B. Oh yeah! Bass geeks may also recognize the signature Jakstadt shape of my orchestra bass.
