I had a lesson with a new adult student this past week. The lesson went really well, but it seemed like the bow was having a hard time grabbing the string. I asked her if I could try the bow, and I immediately noticed that the hair seemed old. Very old.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve had that bow rehaired,” she said.

“How long?” I asked.

“My last rehair was in 1976.”

!!!!!!!!

Think about that–neither Jaws nor Star Wars had come out yet in 1976, and the personal computer was just a project in the garage of some California geeks.

What was surprising to me was that although the bow obviously needed a rehair, but it didn’t feel like it was 31 years overdue for one. I would have thought that the hair would have not grabbed at all, but it did an OK job.
