Here’s a video featuring the excellent group Time for Three. This bluegrass/classical trio played with the IRIS Orchestra in 2006, and it was a real pleasure to get to be on stage with them. You’ll be hearing Ranaan Meyer on bass along with violinists Zachary DePue and Nicolas Kendall.

Here is an interesting study from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation about how to involve young people in nonprofit arts organizations. This reading ties in well with my article Rethinking Music Performance Degrees:

I am putting the finishing touches on this week’s Contrabass Conversations episode. This week you will be hearing an interview with and music from jazz bassist Eric Hochberg. I think that you will really enjoy the episode, and I look forward to hearing listener reactions to our first jazz bass guest.

We hit 1000 posts and sailed past earlier this month—an artificial landmark, perhaps, but it still makes me think about what has been developed so far and what is coming up in the future on the blog. Readership has mushroomed, the comments are pouring in, folks are checking out the podcast, submitting content, trading [...]
Here is a short clip of bass soloist and recent Contrabass Conversations guest François Rabbath performing Le Cri during Recital Hour. This performance occurred a few days before François did the interview for Contrabass Conversations, and it is great to hear him play this piece.

Drew McManus wrote a post recently about the benefits and drawbacks of brevity in concert programming. He has written on this subject in the past on his blog Adaptistration, and it is a very important and touchy subject. This particular post discusses the Chicago Opera Theater’s double feature of Bartok’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle [...]

Robert Oppelt just wrote a story about Mstislav Rostropovich from his time with him in that National Symphony Orchestra:
Rostropovich StoryThe great cellist Mistislav Rostropovich just passed away. As he made himself available so freely, many musicians around the world have their own “Slava” stories. I thought I would tell at least one story from my [...]
National Symphony recently sent me this photo he took last summer in Bourbon-Lancy, France. It’s good to see that we bass players are making our mark in the gardening world as well! Visit Robert Oppelt’s website for more bass photos as well as helpful bass tips other information.

I wonder what’s going on in this tortoise’s little brain? He is absolutely not going to allow any cats to invade his garden. Watch this little guy torment the cats in this video–it is pretty impressive to see how fearless he is, and how alarmed the cats are at becoming a target for [...]
