Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan freelancers may be interested in this audition for the South Bend Symphony. The scale is fairly low at only $73 per service, and the mileage rate is not specified. I believe that they do have some mileage compensation, although I am not sure what the rate is or what mileage compensation cap is in place. If any readers know about these issues, please leave a comment!
There is a minimum service guarantee of 35 services in place for both positions under the previous contract, although the orchestra is currently negotiating a new contract, so this may change. Having a minimum service guarantee is rare among jobs of this level (mid-tier Midwestern per-service positions)–it’s nice to know that you’ll be compensated x amount for the season even if they end up reducing you off of a program.
One tidbit not in the job announcement–the South Bend Symphony has a homestay program for out of town musicians. You stay with orchestra patrons, which reduces long drives (and the resultant gas expenditures), although I believe that you do not get paid for mileage if you pick this program. Doing the homestay almost certainly puts you ahead financially with gas prives hovering well above $3.00 a gallon in this region of the country.
