[...] Part 1 - Cabs - As I watch my violinist, flutist, and clarinetist colleagues getting off of the train outside of a gig while I circle frantically for a parking spot (legal or illegal—anything! I’m running late!), my eyes narrow and my jealousy burns. Why on Earth did I pick this big, awkward, delicate, oddly shaped transportation nightmare of an instrument as my means of livelihood?
dear jason,

its unfortunate to hear of your ill experience with cabs in the states. ill be going to peabody in august and i really hope baltimore will be more pleasant than in chicago.

in singapore, i do not face such a big problem transporting the bass on the cab. i have friends who call for maxi cabs all the time, but it is a big hole in the pocket. usually, i'll just flag a regular cab. there is a way to fit the bass into the cab or any regular sized car with 4 doors. the hard part would be to convince the cab driver that it can really fit in the cab. because it really does, even with my thickest case.

anyway, you have to put down the driver and front passengers seat. from there, manouver the bass such that the scroll is on the floor of the front passenger seat and the lower bout rests on the passenger seat (thats still lowered). then, the drivers seat can come up again and one or two people can sit at the back. it works on all four doored vehicles, even my parent's toyota corolla.

ill take a photo when i next cab. but i seldom do that now. i take the train. =) causes a big stir...
