Hey, thanks for the great article. Really enjoyed reading it. Question: Who's the painter of the sinking ship in the raging sea that you feature at the head of the article. I'm just fascinated by it. Seem to remember it from an art history class way back, but can't seem to locate it anywhere.

Would appreciate any info you have. Thanks!

I agree with Elaine Fine (with whom I worked in Memphis); you definitely should publish this material in book form and offer it to the public. Also post a link to your Amazon sales page on viola list, Orchestra list, string_teacher_support, and all the other groups [See String-Related Listservs at http://beststudentviolins.com/listservs.html ] Excellent work, and right (so to speak) on the money.

I really enjoyed the whole series. I am currently a student at a small liberal arts school in Illinois. When I first entered the university I was stuck between biology and music. I wanted to be a doctor, but knew that if I did not give music performance 100% effort, I would never be able to compete for an orchestra spot. The scholarship that I was given also help push my mind towards music. I WAS studying for a music degree, however now I am getting a degree in biology. After looking at these articles, I can safely say I am happy with my choice to go back into science and eventually medicine.

I completed the music performance degree studies up until the middle of sophomore year. (Next year I will be a junior) While the analysis of music theory, demands placed on performers, and amount of material I had to learn for music history was not a waste of time, very little of it has practical application. "Oh you have a degree in music....so how does music apply for the business position we want to hire you for? Do tell us more about the evolution of Gluck's operas!" I think that music is great for personal study, but as my own music history professor put it "There are just too many music majors."

When I look at the world I see employers who do not guarantee health insurance or pensions. Freelance life seemed a bit better, but the cost are just unreal as you pointed out.

I am glad I made the choice to go to medicine, while still in undergrad!
