I finally took the plunge (for the second time) and moved the bass blog to its own domain today. Long-time readers may remember me attempting this six months ago, moving the blog from jasonheath.blogspot.com to doublebassblog.com, with disastrous results (although at first I was really excited about the possibilities of this project).

I posted a lament about starting my blog on Blogger last week, prompting a response from the Blog Bloke on how to best go about this move. His advice is 100% solid, and it differs from the method that Blogger recommends, so be sure to follow his advice if you’re thinking of such a move.

When I tried this with Blogger’s instructions earlier this year, I ended up having my blog redirect to a GoDaddy park page filled with double bass ads after an hour or two. Lovely. Several futile e-mails and phone calls later, I threw up my hands and went back to Blogspot. Lots of folks who managed to get this to work still had problems–some blogs that could be accessed at http://www.randomdomain.com could not be accessed at http://randomdomain.com. This, to me, is ridiculous. I want you to be able to get to this blog regardless of whether or not you type “www”, so I bagged it and went back to Blogspot.

There are some specific reasons why I wanted to get off Blogspot, although I think that it’s a good (easy and free) choice for many people. The Blog Bloke’s method makes it possible to get to me through many methods.

The method I used keeps all of my old backlinks, so anything that points to a page on jasonheath.blogspot.com redirects to doublebassblog.org. I also own the domain doublebassblog.com, which will also take you to doublebassblog.org.

___________

Why doublebassblog.org? Well, when I originally let Google’s Apps for Your Domain application serve up doublebass.com I seemed to permanently screw up some association for that URL in Google’s databases, and I can just picture a repeat of all the garbage I went through in January. New URL–clean slate–no problem. I still own doublebassblog.com and will redirect it here for the time being. I can always do something with it later.

Plus, I like the idea of a .org domain for this blog. It kind of fits what I’m trying to do here better than a .com. It’s a really small thing, but I figured that I’d take the initiative and host the blog at the .org domain.
