This article is really encouraging - I'm an electric bass player who is transitioning to DB - I'm the same as you were, as soon as I got my bass, I started playing it, even though I knew it needed a bridge reshape and a new spike. The high action and higher tension strings have wrecked my plucking fingers, and I ended up playing two gigs with very painful blisters - not having had to cope with blisters for many years, the differences between instruments caught me unawares somewhat! I'm worn out after one tune! I'm going to persevere, as this a new chapter in my playing life, though I still love my electric bass too.

What a bummer it is to have these sort of instrument issues. One of the problems with playing such a non-standardized instrument, no doubt.

Thanks so much for this essay, I went through the exact same kind of thing, I went to Mexico this year from January to the end of July with my family. Are car was packed and all my parents would allow me is one of those Palatino electric uprights. The neck on that instrument makes the Englehart necks look mammoth. Man did it take a toll on my hands and fingers lucky I get my real bass, that I love back tomorrow. I'm so excited to play without pain and enjoy practicing.
