Description

Early Music Chicago presents a program of ‘consorts and music for divers instruments’ from the time of Queen Elizabeth I. Grouped around the exquisite pavans, galliards, and fantasies for viol consort by Byrd and Dowland are pieces for solo lute, harpsichord, and viol by Sumarte and Sweelinck among others. This concert immediately follows a lecture by Newberry Consort Music Director David Douglass on “Shakespeare’s Songbook, taking place at the Newberry Library, and features Kate Shuldiner, Connie Strait, and members of the Spirit of Gambo (Phillip Serna, Ken Perlow, Russell Wagner) on violas da gamba; Joel Spears, lute; and Jason Moy, harpsichord.
