I have been remiss in reporting interesting news items and other people’s blog posts as of late. I have a whole list of them tagged for blogging (which you can always check out by visiting my link blog), but I’ve been so busy with the stories, articles, audio, and video projects that I’ve kind of dropped the ball on that aspect of the blog.
Here’s a brief rundown of some of the interesting items I’ve been reading recently. Expect more posts like this soon.
- Peabody Double Bass Blog – This new blog from Peabody bass faculty members Jeff Weisner, John Hood, and Paul Johnson is being regularly updated with new content. I think that this blog is a prime example of how musicians can use technological resources like blogs for educational purposes, and I encourage people to check it out. Jeff Weisner has been writing a multi-part series titled Shopping for a Music School. This is highly recommended reading for any musician embarking on the music school selection and audition process. Check out Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4 of this very useful series.
- Joshua Nemith’s Cincinnati Pianist Blog – Josh put out a really excellent follow-up post and blog comment to last month’s popular post You Can’t Teach Professionally and Perform Professionally, articulating all the ways in which the best performers in the business are so frequently teachers as well. Josh also put out a very interesting post about research at Northwestern University demonstrating that children’s verbal skills are enhanced by music practice.
- Copying Your Own CD is Stealing – That’s what the RIAA is claiming. Rip a CD to your computer for listening on your iPod? You’re stealing it. So they say. Yet another reason to hate the major labels. Via Mashable.
- Music Advocacy – A Waste of Time? – Joseph Pisano engages in an interesting debate about the perceived value of music education. Via MusTech.net.
- CSO Bass Blog Tour Coverage – Michael Hovnanian (Chicago Symphony Orchestra bassist and Contrabass Conversations guest) put out some great blog posts covering the CSO’s recent European tour. Check out his blog for more info, and check out this great photo post featuring all sorts of familiar faces from the Chicago Symphony.
