Story Time with Contrabass Conversations launching this week

Ever since I got into podcasting, I have been itching to do what I’m launching this week.  My original idea for starting a podcast was something like a combination of Digital Flotsam (if you haven’t heard this show, stop what you’re doing and check it out–it’s fantastic) and This American Life–in other words, I [...]

Basses, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Part 5: All-Night Drives

This topic was actually the very first personal narrative ever attempted here on the blog, a little less than a year ago. While I still enjoy this previous post (with pictures of the described drive), the topic of all-night commuting is such a painfully bizarre one that I thought it could stand to [...]

News from the music blogosphere

Here are a few short bits from some of my favorite music blogs. You can always visit my link blog to see all the stories (both music and non-music related) that I’ve been checking out:

Arts as Background Noise - This interesting post from Butts in Seats discusses criteria for supporting arts-friendly politicians. Interesting [...]

Checking in with Eric Steffens and his semester of double bass study in Vienna

I’ve been enjoying reading the posts from Eastman School of Music senior (and former student of mine) Eric Steffens on his blog documenting his experiences studying bass in Vienna.  Eric has been having a great time checking out all sorts of things in Austria, like discovering a house that Beethoven lived in:

…seeing a performance [...]

Chicago Symphony bass section tour photos

We’ll be finishing up our interview with Michael Hovnanian on this week’s Contrabass Conversations episode and get a chance to hear some of his double bass playing.  If you’d like to catch up with his previous interview segments, you can visit his Contrabass Conversations page here.
As Drew McManus mentioned on his blog Adaptistration, Michael kept [...]

Bob Dylan’s incomprehensible rants

New York Magazine did a very amusing spread last week about The Most Incomprehensible Bob Dylan Interviews of All Time. One of my personal favorites is this clip from 1965 chastising Time reporter Horace Judson (who looks horribly uncomfortable) about…well…let me know if you figure out what Bob’s talking about!
