CDs and DVDs of the Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra are currently being sold to raise funds for the Corin Long Memorial Fund.  Corin Long, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal double bassist, died in a diving accident in Spain. Corin was renowned as an excellent performer and pedagogue, and he will be greatly missed in the double bass and classical music world.

Funds raised from the sale of these CDs and DVDs will be used to help provide financial assistance to struggling musicians.  Corin’s sister Vanessa writes:

Corin was in the Leicestershire schools symphony orchestra in the early 80s and all these Cds are recordings of this world renowned youth orchestra. Corin is playing on those dated 1980 to 1982. He is playing the solo in Mahler 1, 3rd movement, aged about 10 or 11. Eric Pinkett was the founder of the county school of music in Leicestershire and a wonderful and inspirational  man. John Whitmore, from whom the Cds can be obtained runs an LSSO website…pictures of Corin aged 9 or 10 can be seen here playing the bass in this orchestra! It’s great!

Take a look at www.lsso.co.uk (photos from 1980 to 1982) if you have time. See if you can spot Corin (and me on violin incidentally).

Please, if you can, order some CDs/DVD, sending the form on attachment 5 to John Whitmore. Half the money from each CD will go straight into the Corin Long Memorial fund to help a financially struggling musician or two each year, and half will help maintain the LSSO website, a superb training ground for musicians of the future.

The standard of the LSSO has always been fantastic and it is one of (if not THE) leading youth orchestras in the world. You will not be disappointed!

You can download the list of CDs and DVDs plus the order form here.
