Matt Heller performs Mendelssohn 3 and provides bow arm analysis

Matt Heller has put out a bunch of really excellent posts on his hellafrisch blog lately.  For those new to the bass blog here, Matt is a bassist in the Calgary Philharmonic.  He was previously a member of the New World Symphony (where he was featured in a New York Times piece), and he also played in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and attended Northwestern University.

Matt and I performed in some summer festivals together over the years–he also experienced the events described in my stories I Fly Plane! and You Play Solo….I Dance!

Fellow bass blogger Stan Haskins and Matt have been engaged in an inter-post dialogue about the angle of the right elbow in double bass playing (warning–bass nerddom to follow….but this is the bass blog, after all).  Matt has included a video on his blog post demonstrating an efficient bow arm angle for low register playing.

This interesting post is indicative of the great writing that Matt and Stan provide on their respective blogs.  I have both of these sites in my Google Reader, and I check in whenever a new post is published.  They’re great examples of the high quality of musical dialogue occurring on classical music blogs today.
