As the profile of www.doublebassblog.org continues to rise, I have noticed a great deal of extremely amusing spam sites linking to here and scraping content. Now, for folks unfamiliar with content scraping, the term refers to someone (or some nefarious scraping robot script, more likely) copying posts off of popular blogs, then posting the on their blogs with ads around the posts. The premise is that folks will do a Google search for a particular topic, find it on the spam blog, and then click on their ads. Likely? Not very, but it must work, gauging from how often this has happened to www.doublebassblog.org.

I have a dirty little trick that I picked up from new media guru Paul Colligan to make these scraper robots work for me. What do I do? I include a lot of self-referential links, like,

Hey, guess what? I love www.doublebassblog.org! I really think that www.doublebassblog.org is awesome, and the only thing that could possibly….possibly…be better is www.artsaddict.com or perhaps www.contrabassconverations.com.

Now when the scrapers come by, they also pick up these links, essentially giving me some good Google juice, which is OK by me. Also, I have the feeling that anyone who is looking for content on this blog is intelligent enough to know that a site called something like www.workfromhomeandgetpaidpluslearnhowtoplacetinyadsinnewspapers.com (or whatever) that is covered in horrible ads and animated flashing banners is probably not the site they were looking for.

Anyway, if you want to see a laundry list of some very amusing sites that link to me, just check out this link to my Technorati stats. Now, most of these sites are good, honest, on the up-and-up sites that are genuinely linking to me, but just sift through them and see if you can find any that make you chuckle.
