We’ve got a few quick news items collected over the past week to start off your week:

  1. Exploring Chamber Music with the Chicago Chamber Musicians now live We recently launched our new collaborative series between Contrabass Conversations and the Chicago Chamber Musicians.  This project was conceived by Chicago Symphony Orchestra double bassist Brad Opland, and it seeks to highlight world-class performances of chamber music featuring the double bass.  If you missed our inaugural episode, don’t worry–you can listen to it here (the beauty of podcasting!).
  2. Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra lockout situation worsens – Drew McManus has been providing detailed coverage of the rapidly deteriorating situation in the Jacksonville Symphony over on Adaptistration.  Although one can think of many situations like this that had a rosy ending, this looks to be a really bad situation for all involved.  Learn more through the following links:

  3. Phoenix Symphony – lessons for Oregon? – Continuing in a similar vein, Charles Noble blogged about the Phoenix Symphony’s slow recovery from the brink of collapse a few years back and how the Oregon Symphony (his orchestra) could learn some valuable lessons from this situation. (more)
  4. Bass-Ackward – Michael Hovnanian (Chicago Symphony musician, bass blogger, and Contrabass Conversations guest) wrote a fun and enlightening post about different string section configurations used in the Chicago Symphony and how these grumpy creatures of habit known as orchestra musicians react to being positioned in new ways in the orchestra.
  5. Virginia Dixon Podcast Interview – This week we featured an interview with Suzuki Bass School pioneer Virginia Dixon on the CBC podcast.  It was a great interview–check it out if you missed it.
  6. Violin Playing Robot – Jonas Lohse blogged this on his Double Bass Guide site.  Quite cool.
