I just added two new features to the blog interface, so if you’re reading this in an RSS feed reader you may want to click over to the site and check it out for yourself.  There is a small area in the upper right sidebar for a featured story and a featured bassist.  Interested in being featured?  Have a good idea for a person that should be featured?  Let me know–I’m always looking for new ideas!  Stories may be drawn from new material or from the nearly 2000 archived posts on the blog, and bassists will frequently (but not always) come from the Contrabass Conversations archives.  I’ll be rotating in new stories and features on a regular basis, so be sure to check back in and see what’s being highlighted throughout the week.

It always fascinates me when I get a chance to watch over the shoulder of someone who hasn’t previously visited my blog when they get on it for the first time.  You learn a lot by watching what draws people’s attention.  I’ve found that these little photo/text boxes (like the ‘Best of the Blog’ feature in the left sidebar) inevitably draw people’s attention, causing them to click on them and check out the connected story.  People often read the first post or two, then see the little photos and headlines and start clicking away. By that point, they’ve begun their descent into the bass blog rat hole and are much more likely to stick around and read a half-dozen posts or so.

As one amasses a great deal of information on a blog, finding a way to draw reader attention to interesting content without making your site a hideous mess is a constant struggle, and I am constantly trying to find new ways to tweak the blog interface for the best user experience possible.
