The comment directly references a news item from a few weeks prior to its delivery. In a heavily-accented English, this teacher said to me, mid-lesson, "You know, Kathy, your understanding of physics of string playing is like.... JFK Junior flying plane. Only-- for us, is not matter of life and death." I choose this as my favorite nasty comment not because it cut the most deeply (it actually made me laugh as it was one of the "lighter" moments in that particular lesson!) but because this pearl was obviously something envisioned and polished so carefully by this guy.... and dropped upon ME!!!!
