I always enjoy seeing members of the online double bass community appear in print media. What we do here online has, I believe, just as much validity and potency (and has arguably surpassed print media in importance in recent years) as print media, and most of the material published here on doublebassblog.org actually reaches more eyeballs than any of these individual print publications. Still, I can’t help but feel a thrill every time I see a paper publication from someone that I’ve featured prominently on doublebassblog.org!

Justin Locke featured in Bass World

The always entertaining bassist, author, and corporate speaker Justin Lock e had an excerpt from his book “Real Men Don’t Rehearse” published in the most recent edition of Bass World (Vol. 31 No. 3, 2008). Titled “The Last of the Ninth,” this story puts a wry spin on a classic bass joke, and it is full of the kind of humor one finds throughout his book.

Check out Justin sharing amusing gig stories, his career as a double bassist, and some valuable advice for musicians entering the professional circuit on our Contrabass Conversations interview with him:

Phillip Serna also featured in Bass World

Regular doublebassblog.org and contrabassconversations.com contributor Phillip Serna had a featured article in this most recent edition of Bass World as well. Titled “The Viola Da Gamba and the Double Bass – Transcribing Unaccompanied Lyra Viol Works for the Double Bass” (Phillip likes the long titles!), this piece is an in-depth analysis of the transcription process and the available possibilities for the bass player when looking at gamba repertoire. Phillip does his usual excellent job with this article–highly recommended.

Phillip’s contributions to the doublebassblog.org and contrabassconversations.com initiatives are peppered throughout these virtual pages, so corralling them all together neatly can be a challenge, but here are some places to get started:

Jason Heath in recent and upcoming print media

In addition to the recent feature in International Musician about my blogging projects, I got a nice mention in the current edition of the Milwaukee Pro Musician. Thanks, guys! I’ve also got a couple of new features coming out in some very cool publications, but I’ll keep mute on the specifics until I actually have them in hand (I’ve learned to wait until I actually have the publication in my hands before mentioning a print feature!), so stay tuned for more details.

Road Warrior Without an Expense Account – the book!

I’ve also completed the final edit to “Road Warrior Without an Expense Account,” my book about the state of the classical music business and what trends performing musicians should expect in the coming years. Originally a ten-part blog post series, this treatise has been expanded into a 100 page book of advice, reminiscences, facts, figures, tends, and possible solutions regarding the state of the business in the early 21st century. Expect a hard copy very soon, and stay tuned to the blog for more details.

My next book

I’m also assembling the materials for my second book, which will be considerably lighter in tone than “Road Warrior.”

The title?

You guessed it:

My Car Caught Fire and Exploded!
