As a creator of freely distributed Creative Commons content (on Contrabass Conversations as well as doublebassblog.org), I see YouTube, podcasting, social media, and other such distribution platforms as a huge and largely untapped resource for classical musicians. Legal questions concerting rebroadcasting content through these channels tends to muck up the works, making very few orchestras attempt podcasting and even fewer attempt posting online video. Even blogging–a mechanism with much less murky legalistic concerns for classical musicians–tends to be underutilized and poorly implemented when attempted.

It’s therefore refreshing to check out conductor Bill Eddins’ videos (via Adaptistration). Here’s a great example of how a musician can reach out to colleagues and audience members. Wouldn’t you like to hear your favorite musician offer up his or her thoughts like Bill does here? Why don’t more people do this?

Also, you’ve simply got to check out Drew McManus’ original post and watch a truly…..er, unique rendition of Neo Classical author Holly Mulcahy playing the trombone solo from Bolero!
