I can so relate to the expectations people have for getting free art/music. I was a full-time graphic artist-web designer. People seem to think that art jobs are just fun, not really work, and as such I would probably just love the "fun" of designing a web site for their business for free. Hmmm, maybe I should let them experience they joy of fixing my son's teeth with the fun job of applying and adjusting braces - for free. Even at my kids school (where I do donate plenty of time and money) they have no qualms paying parents for their professional services for things like legal aid, drainage work, or remodeling/construction work. However when it comes to any arts area services, the school just expects a gleeful donation. When the music teacher went out on maternity leave, the administration expected several parents , who were music professionals, to fill in for free. Maybe the principal should be just be a volunteer - just for the love helping out kids so much. The administration was finally convinced to offer real pay for the real work of continuing the music program uninterrupted.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Dr. Serna. I could not possibly agree more with this post. A well-written, well thought-out article. I enjoyed reading it.
