Double bassist and all-around cool guy Oz Acavedo recently posted this video of Czech bassist Miloslav Gajdos playing his arrangement of Monti’s Czardas for bass trio with Greg Sarchet of the Chciago Lyric Opera and Leonid Finkelsteyn. Live in Chicago 1996. This is the same arrangement played by Patkolo and Vengerov elsewhere on YouTube (as well as here on the blog!).
It cracked me up to see Gajdos pull the “bow under the string” trick at the end of the piece–I remember watching Wolfgang Guettler do the same move during the master classes in which I worked with him. I never could seem to get that move… maybe it’s that I’m a French bow guy.

Where are all the “heros” who say that Guy Tuneh’s bow is not Paralel to the to the “brige” or not always straight or Arms are to short or “out of tune”… (as they said about Tuneh…)
Gajdos is one of the greatsest Bassist and teacher of our time and Walle: his bow in not paralel/straight to the Brige and more than few notes are also out of Tune.
To me Guy Tuneh’s sound has soul much more than Gajdos sound. But after all the two Guy & Gajdos are every good friends and Guy has performed with Miloslav many times and also toke masterclass with him.

Staring at bow arms and hanging on a couple of out of tune notes with a player of this magnitude shows that you completely miss the point. Often times being so engrossed in the music yields a sour note here and there. Listen to Casals or Starker. People don’t question their musicianship. Yet I have heard more than one out of tune note. Does solo bass have higher standards? It does stand to reason that Mr. Tuneh has quite a bit of respect for Gajdos if he took a lesson from him. BTW, I think that if either of these virtuosos would probably laugh at us for even comparing them. This is music. Love it. Don’t compare stats as if they are football players.

I know Mr. Tuneh and Mr. Gajdos, they are good friends, and more than once played together Solo and Chamber works, some even as first time ever new-transcripsions.
In Germany i had the chance to see live (together on stage) this two giants, amazing how they admire each other, when playing and even after. Gajdos treats Tuneh like he was his own child.
How these two on stage enjoy and having fun, its like the hall is
full with light, humor, warm. its a “most to experience”!!
Amazing to ARTISTS – they have tremendous respect to EACH-OTHER!!
they just love what they do, each one in his area.
