We’ve had 90 comments so far about the recent video of Guy Tuneh playing excerpts from the Elgar Cello Concerto. This has certainly been one of the most heated discussions we’ve had on the blog during its four years of existence. I am a big fan of Mr. Tuneh’s playing, and so are a great number of blog visitors, but there has certainly been lot of back-and-forth about various aspects of the performance.
I don’t get many European commenters aside from when I feature Guy Tuneh (probably because the blog content tends to be somewhat U.S.-centric). It’s good to see such vibrant opinions from visitors, though I’ve had to put the “comment firewall” up because of some very inappropriate comments coming in from a few individuals.

When can we see the whole Video??
Jason,
Think about Melinda’s and Mark’s point.
After watching Maestro Tuneh’s playing, Its requisiting to have first-hand explanation!!!
Why Not!
Interpretation is a matter of personal taste, I dont think that we should mix this point and creating a mis-judgment about
his bass playing. (he is Elegat, smooth amd much more..)
Guy Tuneh is one of the most finests bassists alive today.
&
“Those who actuated by jealousy: H u s h !”
Besides performing this video, where is Guy Tuneh’s “voice”
in this discussion?
One more thing to Jason, I’m very happy that your blog is getting “high-rating”, but when it comes to be a “Monky Circus”
like in some of the comments, we all, (not only you Jason)
should be careful!!
and once again:
“Those who actuated by jealousy: H u s h !”
You can find in Everybody’s playing something to say about,
no one is Perfect, especially not the “stars” that many blog visitors mentioned.
But still Guy Tuneh go on stage and performing, calculating to get Good or Nasty critics, but he is doing this. (This Blog is the proof to that point)
Not like many “Heros”, strong in typing (at home) as a weapon against Tuneh, instead of being “Heros” in Bass-playing.
Lets face it, Tuneh’s playing/Talent creat a “bit” of jealousy in everyone of us – the question:
Are we dealing with this in the right way???????
I dont realy understand whats the “problem” with this Guy?
His performance includes along many other things an offer to
consider new approach to this Work.
Is it abig sin?
As a Cellist I’ll study his elusive/interesting approach!
I believe i have something to wise.
About the “Long” discussion about his hands, bow, tune etc.,
I’d like to respond “Shortly”: Its high quality of String instrument playing!
O.M.D,
To render such an atmosphere by playing.
Nice.
Normally some of us are expecting to “get” a performance
always faithful to what the composer wrote, I think its beacuse some of us are anxiety that “our” performance will not be convince enough, but as long as the performer reached to present
some convinced points (Guy is certainly got some points) I dont think its false, Guy has a message
and he use Elgar for this, he try to take the Max out of it.
Mr. Tuneh performing ln away that shows that it lookes like he “wrote” it together with the composer, very involved, for me some idaes could be considered as an improvement to what we know.
This is how I see his “back-and-forth about various aspects of the performance.”
Thanks Jason for posting this Video.
I cann’t wait for the next Guy Tuneh video to come.
“Amazed at the 110 comments (and counting) about the recent Guy Tuneh video on my blog”
Is it still your blog? or Maestro Guy Tuneh’s?
Hi Wolfgang–the beautiful thing about blogging is that conversations like this can occur, but there is still a regular flow of other content within the blog. The only people even seeing these back-and-forth conversations about Mr. Tuneh’s Elgar video are those who choose to drill down to the Elgar post. The vast majority of blog visitors probably haven’t even seen these comments (which is why put up the post directing visitors to the Elgar video).
Most of the visitors to this blog (there are 1800-2000 visits per day) probably haven’t checked out Mr. Tuneh’s video. I’m putting this out to help spread the word about him because I’m a fan of his playing.
So… no, this obviously isn’t Guy Tuneh’s blog. If folks dig a little deeper here, they’ll find nearly 3000 posts about a variety of topics, plus over 100 interviews and videos on the Contrabass Conversations sister site.
If anyone’s interested in leaving some feedback about how various bass players play excerpts, check out the latest virtual master class track. Bass players that submit their tracks for this project are looking for feedback on their playing and would appreciate some comments.
Also, if anyone is interested in submitting their own tracks (anonymously–no one will know who you are unless you tell me to put your name out) fill out the contact form or leave a comment letting me know.
BRAVO JASON!!
Like you I agree!!! 1000000000000000000000000 % !!
however, also,
I think that Guy Tuneh is a living LEGEND as a person and as an Outstanding performer, so you are not the only fan of this Very special and importent guy!!
(some people are having problem to except this – sc++w them!).
But lets see the big commentors on the “virtual master class”,
where briliant is needed. In this place its very “hush”, intresting!
No “new” comments every thing is Banal… like reapet the one and only brocken record that they ever heard from their Banal teachers!!!! (reapet the same comment/subject on and on and on…. no new view)
But to pay Tuneh like this is pur, after all he is an Outstanding
Performer!! and they are julius!!!
(or 97% moronic with no basic info about string-playing or music history in head…, sorry guys go to school, you are embarrassing your self!)
BRAVO Jason just keep on, dont let some f++kers to put you down!
BRAVO Guy Tuneh for great music and AMAZING power!!!
you both are my heros!!!
“… Also, if anyone is interested in submitting their own tracks (anonymously–no one will know who you are unless you tell me to put your name out) fill out the contact…”
forget it J. even anonymously they have fear!!!
& J.
dont expect from every one to be like Guy Tuneh!
did you know that the first time ever that ELGAR cello Concerto was performing, it was on VIOLA!
so why not double-bass!
sorry to disappoint some of you, but looks to me that Mr. Tuneh did his research work very good, before playing and going with this work on stage!
Its Amazing how Tuneh is telling the story, the one that Elgar heard from the young soldier about the WAR before got killed back in the front, & left Elgar behind depressive, sick & disappointing from humanity. (…Elgar was in hospital when writing the 9/8 motive…)
(This is the entire story, briefly, about this work.)
Tuneh present this work as a Story, a Dramatic story about WAR and after it.
Mr. Tuneh constructed this facts in his interpretation in an ingenuity way, every phrase is unlike the other but rich in details and keeping that said message.
As a Prof. for musicology, as Violin player I give Guy Tuneh
an A+ for his Job and Performance!!
Bravo – we need more performers from this kind!
“I want to live,
I want to give
Ive been a miner for a heart of gold.
Its these expressions I never give
That keep me searching for a heart of gold
And Im getting old.
Keeps me searching for a heart of gold
And Im getting old.
Ive been to hollywood
Ive been to redwood
I crossed the ocean for a heart of gold
Ive been in my mind, its such a fine line
That keeps me searching for a heart of gold
And Im getting old.
Keeps me searching for a heart of gold
And Im getting old.
Keep me searching for a heart of gold
You keep me searching for a heart of gold
And Im getting old.
Ive been a miner for a heart of gold.”
I found mein!
Mr. Tuneh, thank you so much for giving from your self!!
Take care – what you have (heart of gold) is valuable!
This guy is intrested in message, he wish to say something!
he isnt in polishing-pedantic-perfect-robotic-studiocheating- playing!
What an a Artist!
(he could also be a great Rock star!)
Referring the other version of Mr. Tuneh in YouTube,
finally someone who playes the 2nd mov. as “Perpetu-um mobile”
and NOT like crazy fast Spicc. sounds like technical exercise!
Hallo Cello players Get alive!
Every time that I listen to his Elgar I hear discover new detail !
This “debate” is ludicrous,
This guy is playing bass very fine, mastering in his handcraft.
like a starred chef, every movment of him = gold, valeting
his musical rendition.
Its pure inspiration to observe and to listen to him.
(when jealousy makes blind….)
finally!!
A performer with background knowledge of what he presents!!
use his head and not only his hands!
Why cannt i find CD/DVD of this guy?
One of his kind!!
In times that everybody tries to solve the problems of today
this guy is solving the problems of tomorrow.
What a good news for bass!!
BRAVO.
Interesting and educational, but would make something more on this topic?
Yes!
I would try to play it on bass!
If I would have his talent, I would walk and smash everyone of you, for your big mouth, to bring this kind of spirit to the music world!
Moronic discussion!
This guy is extraordinary.
No place to doubt!
I think that the biggest mistake that Mr. Tuneh is doing, is that he tries to be “beloved” by bass-players.
It will lead him to misconceive!!!
Bass-players can be moronic, how can you even dare to think that the level of bass playing today is so good or impresive???
It needs more than just to play the right notes in the right time to say that bassists are amazing or the bass world is getting “kick”, look all over, bassists are playing like a machines, copying each other, is this the level that we as bass-players would like to achieve??
(…some will say yes, well, this comment is not for these guys, they souldnt read it!)
Every monky to play fast is getting the stage, if Patkolo would hear the original Sarasate or the original Cerney he would hide
and very fast, to be a “hero” because all the Idiots out there are simply morons without any idea how the things sould realy sound, or because he is playing just fast like a shocked-monky in a circus!! (sorry for sounding so hard…)
To try to impress the bass-community is a big mistake especially when we have to do with player like Guy Tuneh!!
He sould go and perform to a real audiance and not infront of moronic people to make a moronic comments.
Mr. Tuneh can be in front of the stage with first class muscicians who try to show more than just “I can play the notes”
(like our Prof. from Arizona – Rococo have never being so boring
or cramped on bass, he sould try to impress a real musicians and not only yound students who are looking for teacher…).
The same mistake did the great O. Badila – try to show to bassists a “new world”, they didnt understand it!! (in 50 years maybe…) and he made himself very tangible because of that Amazing Talent that he was.
Guy Tuneh sould take care and just do his way, and never sould listen to comments from morons like some bassists can be!
its waste of time and energy!!!
Huge Talent like G. Tuneh sould go on with creating new standarts
and giving us like always alot to think about!!.
(To give 5 stars in You-Tube for a drunken-bassist who “try” to
play standarts and “proud” that his orchestra – LSO – was making him to a Joke after playing wrong! – bunch of idiots),
Thank you for making my point:
Once again – its waste of time and energy!!!
(sorry if i heart someone – but its a free land….)
and i’m not stupid Dragotesini!!
I Think that Mr. Tuneh give us some new things to think about and he has the “power” to make us looking at ourself
and to ask: what can i do better?
This is like gold – its the best teacher
that someone can have!!!
I had an extraordinary experience, the opportunity to hear Guy Tuneh (in France) play ELGAR cello-concerto accompanimented by Orchestra!
I MUST say, it was FANTASTIC.
AS a cello-fan I heared also Truls Mork live in Freiburg (Germany) with the SWR orchestra and I got the feeling that Mr. Mork (commparing to G. Tuneh) didnt realy understand the “right” spirit of that Concert,
dont get me false, it was Perfect but for me it was to much sober
and less lyrical, it had no Energy, hard to find Drama inside.
Commparing to Mr. Tuneh’s performance I can realy say it was for me much more intresting and powerful, it was with much more details, like a very blue story!!! it was Tragic.
Tuneh played it like for living or dying!
And indeed:
On bass it sounds much more Tragic and cry-ful, more than once like a quiet but power-scream, I dont know if its Mr. Tuneh’s
temperament or something else, but still very very very intresting, Colorful, special, I am mightily impressed ! .
for me its clear 1:0 for Guy Tuneh!!
Guy Tuneh thank you for an unforgettable day.
I will never forget what this Bassist showed us that evening!
(No sign that the Orchestra had problem to accompaniment
Guy Tuneh, they looked like they are very intrested in what he is doing)
Dear Jason (I love your Blog)
I think that Mr. Tuneh’s people got this concert on Video,
so, for once and for all it would be great to post it
Just to keep some idiots quiet!
This Guy is Genius!
Wowww
GREAT, someone to try to get a new limit and new way of playing!
BRAVO!!!
Jason,
After taking a look at the performers list of the ISB 2009,
how can it be that Double-bass Virtuoso Guy Tuneh & Miloslav Gajdos are not going to be part of the next Convention?
Dear Mirable,
Why Should he??
to see bass players tring to play Dittersdorf???
Tuneh is light-years away from that…
Maestro di Maestri
BARAVO!!!
“I’m putting this out to help spread the word about him because I’m a fan of his playing.”
You are not the only one, and also without you “help” he would still be worded about!
No problem just keep on!
(J. – U realy dont have to comment back every moronic comment… )
You are doing simply well.
