Apple continues, as always, to be progressive and forward-thinking with regards to tools for musicians. Nowhere is this more evident than their new eversion of GarageBand (included in the iLife 09 suite of applications). Here are some of my thoughts on one of the new features you can get your hands on with the new GarageBand–I know that I’ll be heading out to get my copy as soon as it ships!

Lesson Store

Oh no! Apple is offering music lessons! Guess I’d better hang my teacher hat up and go home…

But seriously, this is an extremely cool development for Apple. Artists like John Fogerty, Norah Jones, Sting, and others offer both rudimentary lessons on piano and guitar, but also give a bit of a ‘behind the scenes’ perspective on some of their own hits.

Now when you buy a Mac, you not only get a killer piece of musically creative software like GarageBand, but you also get access to music lessons. Learn some rudimentary instrumental skills, record yourself playing on GarageBand, add instruments and experiment with compositions, and integrate it into iMovie for an audiovisual experience.

As an educator, I can’t think of a better way to get young (and old!) people introduced to the power and magic of music–not just listening to music, but performing and composing music. This is going to be a required piece of software in any classroom of mine.
