Reinforcing my belief that this current up-and-coming generation of bassists is the most technically advanced yet, I’d like to offer up this recording passed along to me by bassist Steve Metcalf of Ben Jensen, an absolutely outstanding player who studies with Bruce Bransby. This is a recording of the Gavottes from Bach’s Sixth Solo Cello Suite, played at pitch in a master class.
This really is bass playing of the highest caliber, and it’s a good indicator of just how high the standards are in the double bass community at present.

Great Job Dude!!!!!
if you will go on like this, you will be Great!!
(more great then now…)
Obviously – a sensitive and tasteful musician. The sound reminds me more of a gamba than a double bass. One wonders, with the strange, almost eerie tone, and considering the technical difficulty for the left hand, if it would not be more appropriate, satisfying, and easier to just take the plunge and learn to play these on the cello. It is the rage to learn the suites on the bass at pitch nowadays, but players like this one need to be careful not to be too heavily invested in it. They risk falling behind on the skills necessary to make a living, i.e., a mastery of bowing techniques and musical styles. Hopefully, this player doesn’t have blinders on, because he’s certainly very gifted.
Where’s the link to the Courante? I couldn’t find it anywhere in that most recent post!
I hope there will be more of this fantastic musician – perhaps the whole suite?
All the best from Brazil.
