Phillip Serna Viols Schools.png

Phillip Serna, an old friend of mine who has contributed voluminously to Contrabass Conversations ever since its inception as well as regularly posting here on doublebassblog.org,

was featured in this month’s International Musician for his Viols in Our Schools project. It’s

great to see Phillip getting this kind of recognition for his hard work and inventiveness, and I hope that it helps to spread the word about the viola da gamba to more young people.

Gambas for Young Folks

It’s fun to read about the varied reactions that Phillip gets when he comes into a school to do one of his presentations. For kids accustomed to guitars and drums, a viol is a, well, er, somewhat bizarre thing to be presented with, and Phillip shares a few funny stories about some of the questions he gets asked.

I’d happily post a link to the article, but International Musician keeps their content inaccessible to non-members, so you’ll have to take my word for it if you’re a non-member.

My IM feature in 2008

I was profiled for my blog stuff in 2008 in International Musician as well. We’ve still got the full text to this article up here at Inside the Arts (the blogging network that I’m a part of). Check it out if you haven’t in the past.
