Here’s another popular interview from the Contrabass Conversations archives:
Interview: Kate Nettleman – section bass, Minnesota Orchestra
Double bassist Kate Nettleman, currently principal bass of the Hong Kong Philharmonic, will be moving into her new position as section bassist with the Minnesota Orchestra. Kate is a good friend and a wonderful colleague, and I’m so glad that she got this position with the Minnesota Orchestra!
A former member of the New World Symphony (along with frequent podcast collaborator John Grillo) and the Naples Philharmonic, Kate previously worked for the past several years as a freelance musician, serving as Principal Bass of the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and Assistant Principal Bass of the Elgin Symphony in addition to playing in many other ensembles in the area.
When we did this interview, Kate was still freelancing in Chicago, so you won’t hear about her experiences in Hong Kong or her successful audition with the Minnesota Orchestra, but this is an excellent interview with an intelligent and perceptive musician, and I think you’ll really enjoy it if you haven’t checked it out in the past.

This was a great interview. You and and her ought to do a follow-up!
Great to hear that you enjoyed this–Kate is such an articulate person. I’d love to do a follow-up. She’s certainly had a lot happen in her professional life in the last two years!
