Speaking as someone who teaches (music theory) at one of these less expensive schools, we have quite a few very talented performers come here because it is fairly inexpensive. The very committed students take advantage of the opportunities that we can offer them (which can differ significantly--in good ways--from the big schools) and work their tails off. They then apply to a top-notch graduate school where funding is generally more available (as opposed to the undergraduate level). We have students who payed their dues (literally and figuratively) here at TTU and now have full fellowships to graduate programs at NEC, CCM, Indiana, Yale, and the like.
