Guy Tuneh performs Mozart

Today’s video features double bassist extraordinaire Guy Tuneh (former Contrabass Conversations guest) performing the Mozart Kirchensonaten in C Major for the 2009 Bodensee Festival. Guy has appeared many times here on the blog and on Contrabass Conversations, and it’s great as always to feature him again. Enjoy!

Party for the ears and eyes!

  3. J. on October 28th, 2009 7:20 am

Didn’t we already see the first Mozart?

    however – Great performance.
(despite of non-stable minor intonation by the Violins)

As you said Guy is extraordinaire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Mr. Heath, (why are you moderating comments?)

Mr. Tuneh is a master of passion, it hits my heart…, long time ago….

Thanks you so for this video!

  6. B. on October 28th, 2009 8:06 am

    M a r v e l o u s !
Observing his left hand, it looks like Guy is practicing musical scale non-stop!
I’m still trying to understand his right hand technic sample…
    Thanks for this educational experience.

  7. Dan on October 28th, 2009 8:17 am

(Ahh… was it the same Video that I’ve seen a few minutes ago?)

    Whats going J.?

Is it out as a DVD or something like this?

  8. Greog. on October 28th, 2009 8:26 am

    Guy schuld work alone!!
As a Soloist his charisma is unbeatable. I know that as a Soloist it’s very hard to pay the bills, but still Solo-playing is his Domain!

  9. Emil on October 28th, 2009 8:36 am

    @ Christian,

This recordering is something special (where did you got it?), but can it be that Mr. Tuneh is off-putting Guettler?
Guy is playing AMAZING – his spiccato is even better than BADILAs spiccato!

    Thanks Chris!

  10. Emil on October 28th, 2009 8:37 am

Sorry, its where did you get it? and not as i wrote down before!

  11. Sandra on October 28th, 2009 8:42 am

    Gosh.

Why is he moving so much??
My teacher is saying all the time that the bass sould be stable, is it wrong??

  12. K.S. on October 28th, 2009 8:59 am

Na Rainer, da hast du ein Volltreffer mit diesem Bassist! Was für ein Ausnahmetalent!

    merveilleux, fantastique!

  15. Nora Bergbau on October 28th, 2009 9:27 am

Great. FINALLY you can hear every detail of Guys playing.
(something that I was waiting for – Hi Fi sound)

And indeed he is an artistic genius – he dosn’t repeat the same bow character twice.

His excessive sensibility to the music is outstanding (& arouses envy…).

  16. Hosse on October 28th, 2009 9:38 am

    Why former Contrabass Conversations guest?
You repeat all the this “former”!
last time was before two years, what about now one?

    sincerely a true fan!

P.S. thanks to both of you, you and Christian!

  17. Hosse on October 28th, 2009 9:40 am

Why cann’t I see my comment?

  19. Anton on October 28th, 2009 10:05 am

I had masterclass with this Violin player, his name is Rainer Kussmaul – A Great Violin Prof. from Germay!
He was Conertmaster with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra!

  20. Jason on October 28th, 2009 10:11 am

I’ve said this before on the blog, but I’ll repeat it again–I have to moderate comments on this blog (if you saw the nasty and vitriolic comments that come in every day you would understand). I also have a real job and therefore do not just sit in front of the computer all day waiting to read comments. If I’m lucky, I get a chance to check in once a day and moderate comments.

I therefore find it very irritating to get comments like “Why can I not see my comment?” You can’t see it because I haven’t had a chance to moderate comments! A good way to not get your comment posted is to leave multiple comments bugging me about why you can’t see your comment.

Remember, this is not a pubic forum. This is a private site, owned and operated by me. I’m just trying to share some of Guy Tuneh’s playing, and I’ll review comments when I get a chance… which is not every 10 minutes!

  21. Susane on October 28th, 2009 10:53 am

    Thanks Jason

    Great Video!

and Just keep on in what you do!

  22. Bob Martin on October 28th, 2009 2:02 pm

You can see more classical music video clips on Blip.TV if you sign up. Unfortunately there is less description of what group, who is the conductor, what orchestra and what instrumentalists and etc., you are seeing than on YouTube Thanks for your sharing these gems, Jason.

  23. Michael on October 28th, 2009 3:06 pm

    Dear Christian:

As far as I Know, Wolfgang Güttler considered to be as one of the best out there. Mr. Güttler should be very proud to be such a trust teachers, though, he should fight bravely as an escort (Tuneh is giving him hard time in this Video). This is clear to me that Güttler had nothing to do with Tuneh’s expression, his playing philosophy, his technical expertise, etc. Güttler is something like a professional jober, he seems to me like someone who is properly and professionally, but Tuneh seems to me like someone who is driven by passion, something more like a fire type, very fine, intuitive and beautifully elegant. It could stand as an opposition and therefore be very special, well, it’s a shame that the sound quality is so la la.

Jason, your video is splendid! Guy has so many sides, thank you for showing us some of them!

  24. Anita on October 29th, 2009 1:39 am

As someone already said in one of the German Blogs:
Guy Tuneh is the Michael Jackson of Double-bass!
He is not only playing, he is presenting performing arts, he is acting and creating a sensation. its a show not only bass-playing!

  25. Alex. on October 29th, 2009 1:43 am

    Yep Jason you gotta point!

but this time your server is not cracking down!

  26. Martin on October 29th, 2009 2:42 am

About this exceptional talent there is no doubt, the problem with this kind of talents is, that they are burning out and becoming very fast to swim meaningless through life!

    However; very very nice Video!

    All the best, Martin

  27. Donoven on October 29th, 2009 2:48 am

Is it possible to hear/see Guy playing the Dittersdorf Concerto (No. 2 in E-major) for Double bass and Orchestra?

  28. Mat. on October 29th, 2009 5:00 am

keep on rocking the free world!

  46. Mrs. T on November 1st, 2009 3:51 am

Dose anyone know how Guy holds his Bow ?

  47. Lara on November 1st, 2009 6:04 am

    Thanks J.

  48. Uli on November 3rd, 2009 2:06 am

He has his own way of holding the Bow.
He never holds the Bow the same, German or Franch
he changes between the both and use his own “now-how”.

  49. Martina on November 3rd, 2009 3:50 am

    Speaking of holding his Bow,
I would like to see Mr. Tuneh playing with French-bow.

  50. Claus on November 4th, 2009 6:15 pm

As far as I know he has his own Bow-holding!.
Taking a look at his “home” picture on guytuneh.com proofs that. The strings in the picture are D’Addario, well this is to decoy, he uses other strings, I think something like hand-made strings but still its not clear which…

  51. Claus on November 4th, 2009 6:22 pm

BTW.: in CBC – Guy Tuneh episode, No one word about the strings he uses, even not one word about the music-notes that he uses for his GREAT performances (Elgar, Rococo etc.), this info could be useful – for those to try to play this works also, that all about!
This could be the next issue to ask about…

  52. Fredrick on November 7th, 2009 1:55 am

    Calus gotta point!

I would love to get more information about Mr. Tunehs “now-how”.

  53. Oliviya on November 8th, 2009 4:27 pm

Yep, I think like Claus. However what A splendid way to performing with contrabass!

  54. Sascha on November 10th, 2009 5:40 am

    What an Artist

    King of expression !!

  55. Elton on December 15th, 2009 2:32 am

    Splendid playing!!

I dont even feel that I need to compar his outstanding playing with someone else – he is one of a kind!
