The ever-evolving bassist Rufus Reid – performer, educator, composer and Guggenheim Fellow – has sent the ISB a quantity of his recently published solo for double bass and piano, Caress The Thought (Expressly for Diana Gannett). If the molto adagio section of the Hindemith Sonata and Saint-Saens’ “Havanaise” had a musical love child, this would be it! The piano part is bound by a plastic spiral with special consideration for convenient page turns. The piece comes with both solo and orchestral tuning parts included, and is printed in a large and highly readable format on high quality paper. This addition to the solo bass repertoire would make a great piece for any recital!

Here’s what Rufus had to say about writing Caress the Thought: “I do know this, I wish I could play it like Diana played it. She is a special individual and an incredible musician. I wrote the music with her sound in mind. I am totally thrilled and honored that she liked it well enough to perform it. This is a composer’s dream, I think, to have their music rendered well beyond his or her expectations. Diana surely has done that for me. She has empowered me to continue to write more for the bass in this way, which is truly a new area for me.” To purchase Caress the Thought and to browse for more printed music, CDs, DVDs and more, go to www.ISBstore.com.

In between performing and composing, Rufus will be appearing at the 6th Biennial HAWAII CONTRABASS FESTIVAL, March 21-28, 2010 in Honolulu, Hawai’i, http://hawaiicbfest.org/.
