John Grillo has provided me with some old tapes of the great double bass performer and pedagogue Frederick Zimmermann practicing the bass. These recoedings have been floating around for some time, and they have actually been quite influential in shaping how many bassists approach the instrument. They really sound fantastic, and I think that folks will get a lot out of hearing this material. Stay tuned for this in the coming weeks–I just need to find a moment to sit down and work on it, and then they’ll be out on the podcast.

Double bassist Kirsten Paige (a University of Chicago student and former pupil of Tim Cobb) sent me the following photo and information a while back that includes Zimmermann in the New York Philharmonic bass section. The photo shows the following players (Left to right):

Fortier, Anselme
De Angelis, Joseph
Zimmermann, Frederick
Brennand, Robert
Tivin, Emmanuel
Raviola, C.
Mensch, Homer
Schlossberg, Max
Rybb, D.
