I was reading through some of the destruction stories on your blog and decided to share one of my own. I got a call from one of my student’s fathers while I was driving to a gig. He said the bass had imploded and asked if I’d ever heard of anything like that happening.

I said that occasionally if a sound post falls out or a bass bar comes loose that the top caves in but that it was quite unlikely, especially from what he was describing. Coincidentally their house was on my way so I stopped by. Looking at the bass I told them there was no way it had imploded (you’ll see what I mean looking at the attached pictures). We argued slightly, and I left for my gig.

That night I got a voicemail from the father saying he’d received a call from the contractor doing work on his house. Turns out one of the men had fallen off a ladder and onto the bass. No wonder, it was a mess, but after I heard the story I was actually surprised it hadn’t been much worse! The contractor reimbursed them for the bass and apologized, and we quickly got them a new bass.
