One of my bass students at DePaul is playing Tristan Murail’s “L’Esprit des Dunes” this quarter, and in a quest to give him some advice on tackling this gnarly (but very cool) bass part, I went searching on YouTube for a recording. It’s always neat to see old acquaintances from Northwestern doing really outstanding things in the music world, and I was thrilled to see Robert Ambrose conducting this piece with Bent Frequency, a new music ensemble, back in 2006.

Bob was a doctoral conducting student at Northwestern during my time there, and, in addition to being a very good conductor (as you can see from this video), is a rockin’ electric guitar player who used to play in a band with former Chicago Symphony principal percussionist Ted Atkatz.

Anyway, I don’t know if this piece is up every bass blog reader’s alley, but I think it’s a totally cool piece of music:
