There’s something about the way that Gary Karr tackles a phrase, that combination of vibrato, confident shifting, and close to the bridge rich tone quality that no other bass player quite hits on the head. Are there faster, cleaner, and showier players out there today? Sure. In fact, I probably play my students more Edgar Meyer and Daxun Zhang than Karr recordings in our lessons. But still, there’s something about Gary’s playing that nobody else really quite touches upon.
