Middle Eastern Double Bass – What’s That?!
Jeremy Kurtz, the Principal Bass of the San Diego Symphony (and former Contrabass Conversations guest) passed along a link to bassist Hagai Bilitzky and his website doublebasseast.com. Hagai presented at the 2011 International Society of Bassists Convention in San Diego and was a real highlight of the event for Jeremy. Hagai trained classically as a bassist, but then got into traditional Arabic music later on. Here’s a short (90 second) video of him performing on the bass:

Just like in Classical music and Jazz our challenge in music that has such a long history is the fine balance of respect for tradition along with innovation. Hagai does it in the most tasteful and subtle way possible!
