Czardas performed by Maxim Vengerov, Roman Patkolo, and Jan Jirmasek

This is a great video of Monti’s Czardas by double bassist Roman Patkolo (with Jan Jirmasek accompanying on bass) and Maxim Vengerov on violin. Guanaco from the Cellomania blog recently sent me a link to this post.
Digging through my archives, I realized that I had posted this before but had not correctly archived [...]

Alper Mufettisoglu plays the Gliere Tarantella

Are you in the mood for some rip-roaring, top-notch bass playing? Then check out this video of double bassist Alper Mufettisoglu playing an extremely virtuosic rendition of Gliere’s Tarantella, the fourth in his series of pieces for the double bass.

The Double Bass Stylings of Jeff Bradetich

Here’s a clip of University of North Texas professor Jeff Bradetich performing the Courante from Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major. Jeff is playing it at pitch and in a very different style than the recent Edgar Meyer recording:

If you haven’t checked out Edgar Meyer’s recording of the Bach Suites, you’re missing [...]

Miloslav Gajdos Czech Christmas Medley

I realize the season is long past, but I think that double bassists out there will still enjoy this Christmas medley arranged for double bass nonet by Miloslav Gajdos.

Miloslav Gajdos & Guy Tuneh play Bottesini

Here are some short clips of Miloslav Gajdos & Guy Tuneh performing Giovanni Bottesini`s “Nel cor più non mi sento”. What great sound and artistry from these two musicians!

Miloslav Gajdos Arrangement of Monti Czardas

Here is a video of three double bassists (Vojtech, Gunars, & Marek) playing an arrangement of Monti’s ‘Czardas’ for double bass trio. This arrangement was done by the great Czech bassist, composer, arranger, and teacher Miloslav Gajdos. I saw Miloslav perform in the fall of 2005 at Northeastern Illinois University here in Chicago, and [...]

Edgar Meyer and Rufus Reid in Chicago

My busy schedule prevented me from seeing two fantastic double bassists play concerts last week. Edgar Meyer played at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall in Evanston, Illinois with the fabulous mandolinist Chris Thile. Seeing Edgar perform is always a treat. I remember rehearsing and premiering Edgar’s second double bass concerto with the IRIS Chamber [...]

Edgar Meyer Video - Arco with Strength in Numbers

Here is a great video of Edgar Meyer starting a tune with the group Strength in Numbers. Edgar usually plays pizzicato in the clips I have found before, but this tune features him playing an arco solo line to start it all. Note the fluid shifting technique and impeccable intonation–what a player!

Bass Balloon

Here is a video sent to me by Jeremy Marino featuring a guy creating a sort of bass out of balloons:

Singapore Bass Quartet

My bass blogging buddy PY sent me a link to her Singaporean bass quartet rehearsing an Irving Berlin rag. They are all amateur bassists from Singapore, and I think it sounds great. I hope theyalso put up pieces from the concert on YouTube.
